Our 8th group of Trade Journey is off to a busy start this fall. In September we welcomed 15 new participants to begin their exploration into construction trades.
We started off with team building exercises and several opportunities to get to know each other. The group then spent a week at Radius Community Centre where they started developing career portfolios and gained personal insights into their own learning and communication styles.
During the third week the group toured the Sask. Polytechnic facilities and met with several women that work in trades in Saskatchewan. They also completed their SCOT and WHMIS tickets and completed an online tool assessment. They then started with some hands on learning about tools which they further developed by building their own stepping stool. In class they are learning to read the tape measure proficiently and started working on trades math skills.
In the fourth week of the program, they watched a safety presentation on eye protection. They have also been outfitted in their PPE equipment. The participants are also practicing their public speaking skills. They have had several classes with our workplace realities instructor who is a journeyperson plumber. They have also started working on their fitness level by attending scheduled fitness training at the YWCA at Fitness on 25th.
The group also spent 30 hours at Sask. Polytechnic in the introduction to carpentry. They have worked in teams to construct 2 wood sheds. They worked with many different tools, practiced their measuring skills, set up scaffolding and worked with drawings. They have completed the construction of the shed and look forward to adding the electrical components to it in the next few weeks.
YWCA Trade Journey is a 16 week program that bridges women into the construction industry. Trade Journey is made possible through funding from the Government of Saskatchewan Ministry of Immigration and Career Training, and the United Way of Saskatoon and Area.
