Embracing Winter – Being physically active outside during the winter months in Saskatoon

By Fred Dyck, Fitness Manager

As a lifetime Saskatchewanite, I have made the choice to embrace the winter months in Saskatoon and actively look for ways to enjoy the many outdoor oriented amenities Saskatoon has to offer. For me, this takes numerous forms.

I enjoy trail running throughout winter. This is an activity that works well with my overly active dog, Leo. Pictured is Leo and me agreeing to commit to more off leash walks and runs this winter. The City of Saskatoon has made a strong commitment to dog owners with many “off leash” areas which are great for augmenting the walking co-benefit of dog ownership; my personal favorite, whether you own a dog or not, is the Sutherland Off leash park trail system.

As some of you around the gym may have noticed, I bike throughout the winter months with my so called fat bike; one of those odd looking bikes with the big tires. I will have mine around the gym throughout the winter so come by to take a look sometime. Saskatoon has a Fat Bike club called Fatlanders; they bike on the Meewasin Trail system leaving from the Mendel every Tuesday evening throughout the winter.

Biking or outside running in winter are not everyone’s choices for sure. Alternatively, you cannot get a more Canadian activity than skating. My guess is all of the City’s community associations continue to maintain rinks and the City maintains the Clarence Downy Skating Oval. All are great options for a great way to have a truly Canadian winter physical activity. If you have not visited the Oval, it is well worth the skating experience. A 400 m oval designed for speed skating opens in mid-December every year. Use of the Oval is free and includes heated change room and washroom facilities. The setting is very appealing. Skating at the Oval, under the lights, on a winter evening when the snow is falling is one of my favorite Saskatoon experiences I look forward to every year…Followed by hot chocolate, of course.

Whether it be cross country skiing, snow shoeing or just a nice walk along our amazing trail system, Saskatoon is a wonderful place to embrace winter. I like to see all of our members in the gym on a regular basis but using the big Mother Nature gym outside is a great way to help the winter months go by. Make the choice to be active and embrace the great outdoors this weekend.
