Jean's Story: Inspiring Strength and Resilience at Any Age

Meet Jean!

Jean is a dedicated fitness staff member who has been part of the YWCA community since the 1990s. Over the years, she’s faced significant physical challenges, including bilateral knee issues and receiving a pacemaker in 2020. Despite these obstacles, Jean continues to show up and push herself, making incredible strides in her journey to maintain and improve her physical health and wellness.

Before joining the YWCA as a member, Jean had a long and fulfilling career as a physiotherapist where she spent 50 years helping others recover from all kinds of injuries. Jean’s dedication to health has always been at the core of who she is.  When I asked Jean why she keeps coming back to the YWCA after all these years, she shared this with me:
“The atmosphere at the YWCA is a great fit for me. It’s convenient, yes, but more than that, I get to see familiar faces. The staff is welcoming, and supportive, and always offers good advice. It’s like coming to a place that feels like home.”

At the YWCA, we strive to provide a safe and welcoming environment for people of all ages, and Jean is a true testament to that. Her commitment to showing up, staying active, and keeping a positive mindset at 83 is truly inspiring. Thank you, Jean, for being such a wonderful example of perseverance and dedication. We’re so grateful for your continued support!

Jean was one of the regulars when the YWCA had a pool, and after it closed, she didn’t miss a beat. She adapted by continuing to do similar exercises on dry land, like strengthening her arms with weights while in a breaststroke position.
