Saskatoon Community Youth Arts Programming (SCYAP) visited the shelter last night to do a special art project with the YWCA Crisis Shelter residents for the YWCA Week Without Violence.
The project involved creating individualized masquerade masks, fitting, with Halloween coming up. The masks were adorned with glitter, feathers and paint; each one as unique as the person who created it. The night was full of laughs and creativity. The residents shared how the art leader spoke about the importance of women joining together and empowering each other with kind words. Residents were encouraged to look at how they treat each other and remember to support one another.
The concept of empowerment ties into the core of Week Without Violence and the power behind individuals joining together to create a community for change.
