Redefine yourself

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

It’s finally 2010, and there’s no question that the Olympics will be at the forefront of our attention. The strong minds and bodies of our Olympic athletes are a result of years of consistent hard work and dedication.

So why do we assume as mere mortals we can get away with an instant fix? The “5 weeks to perfection” workouts just set you up for injury and failure. The media shows the one or two who succeed in the short term, with the disclaimer of “results not typical”. Is it any wonder it doesn’t work for someone who has a life?

Small changes in habits and routines are the ingredients that sustain real change. This means not just deciding how to lose weight and get in shape, but to see yourself in the future living the habits that keep that weight off. Reasonable and manageable changes to your lifestyle will provide you with better long term health than any lettuce and steamed fish diet ever will. If you can’t decide where to start, do what I did, get help. One of our personal trainers can make all the difference.

Ditch the quick fix and let’s Re-define healthy!

Vern & Clara Welker Fund

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

YWCA Saskatoon is one of five local organizations to benefit from a bequest (a donation made in a will) made by Vernon & Clara Welker via the Saskatoon Community Foundation. Their gift of $2.9 million has established an Endowment Fund that will provide approximately $20,000 to YWCA Saskatoon annually. We are very grateful for the generosity of this couple in remembering YWCA Saskatoon.

Born and raised in the Saskatoon area, Vern and Clara were active members of their community, volunteering their time to such groups as the Lions Club, the Kinsmen Club and the Chatelaine Club of the YWCA. The Welkers’ lives reflect quiet strength and compassionate character, and their ultimate gift to the community is also their greatest testament to their love of the community we all call home. The leadership embodied in this gift will forever improve the quality of life for the people of Saskatoon.
