Flashback Friday’s at YWCA Fitness on 25th

Since January 1st of this year, we have used the last Friday of every month to offer a retro exercise class; we call it Flashback Friday’s. In January, we hosted Y-Bo; our version of the popular Tae Bo classes from the 1990’s. In February, we hosted a step aerobics class much like the popular VHS Jane Fonda workout tapes from the 1980’s. With Easter coming this month, we will take a break from Flashback Friday’s in March but we will be back in April with the Canada Fitness Test.

Yes, we are going to take you back to your Phys. Ed classes of the 70’s and 80’s by offering to test people in the old Canada Fitness Test. The test did change over time with the original six activities being the 50 yard run, 300 yard run, flexed arm hang, shuttle run, speed sit-ups and the standing long jump. We are working on what events we will test and will have the old standards available so you can see how you measured up to your old (but younger) self. If you are too young to remember the Canada Fitness Test, this will be your chance to visit an era prior to home computers; when only the most basic, simple video games existed.

The Canada Fitness Test awarded almost 8 million badges (according to Wikipedia) with more than 14 million participants. The program existed from 1970 to 1992. Our plan is to have our day of testing on Friday April 29th. With fun being our only goal, we certainly don’t encourage you to train for the tests other than following your regular activities. As we get closer to the date, we will let you know how to get involved.
